My Mama’s Brownies

This recipe I’m about to share with you is an old family favorite.  To tell you just how old it is, my mother got the recipe from another mom in my pre-school class.  So, there you have it…OLD!  (My kids remind me that I was “born in the 1900s”….you know, before we had the internet!  LOL!)  These brownies are easy to make, turn out great every time and are always a hit.  In fact, we’ve been enjoying them at every major event for the last thirty-(cough)- years and no one is sick of them!  I think that is the test of a good recipe….something that people just don’t get tired of eating.  A classic, if you will!  So, without further ado, here is our family brownie recipe.  It will soon be a favorite in your house as well….

 MARBLED BROWNIES:

Cream Cheese Batter:

1 bar Cream Cheese

5 TBSP Butter (set aside the remaining 3 TBSP of the butter stick for the frosting later)

1/3 cup Sugar

2 Eggs

2 TBSP Flour

1 tsp Vanilla

Cream butter, cream cheese and sugar.  Add in eggs, combine well.  Add in flour and Vanilla.  Beat until smooth.  Set aside.

Chocolate Batter:

1 Box Duncan Hines Brownie Mix (I prefer the Milk Chocolate Mix)

3 Eggs

1/4 cup Oil

1/2 cup Water

Combine in a bowl.  Stir by hand until clumps are worked through.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Pour 3/4 of the Chocolate mixture into a greased 9×13 pan (I prefer the Air Bake kind).  Next, spoon the cream cheese batter over the chocolate batter.  Drizzle the remaining chocolate batter over the cream cheese batter and gently spread it to make it swirly.  Bake at 350 for 35-40 minutes.  (Bake time may vary on your oven, so check it, toothpick inserted should come out clean!)  Cool COMPLETELY.

Frosting:

3 TBSP Butter

2 TBSP Cocoa Powder

1- 1/3 cup Powdered Sugar

2 TBSP Milk (or cream if you prefer a richer, creamier frosting)

1 tsp Vanilla

Melt butter, take off heat.  Stir in cocoa until blended.  Add remaining ingredients until smooth.  This is a bit of an art and you may have to add powdered sugar (if too runny) or add milk (if too thick) until you reach the right balance and consistency for frosting that you like.   Pour over the pan of cooled brownies.  Let set for a few minutes, then cut and serve!

I sincerely hope you enjoy this recipe as much as our family has!  :)
